Expanding Access to Life-Saving Treatment: The AIMS Program at JADE Wellness Center

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a crucial component in the battle against Opioid Use Disorders (OUD). However, accessing this life-saving treatment is often hindered by various barriers, especially for underserved populations. Recognizing these challenges, the JADE Wellness Center developed the AIMS (Access Immediate Medication Services) program—a low-barrier, patient-centered approach designed to connect individuals with the medications and support they need to achieve and sustain recovery.

Addressing Barriers to Treatment

The AIMS program is tailored to remove obstacles preventing people from receiving timely care. For many, barriers such as transportation difficulties, long wait times, and the stigma associated with addiction treatment can make accessing MAT seem insurmountable. The AIMS program overcomes these barriers by providing immediate, non-emergent medical consultations for Buprenorphine (Suboxone), Naltrexone (ReVia), and long-acting injectable options like Sublocade, Brixadi, and Vivitrol, either on the same day or the next business day. These consultations are offered through both telehealth and in-person visits, ensuring that treatment is accessible to all, regardless of their circumstances.

Comprehensive, Ongoing Support

The AIMS program goes beyond merely prescribing medications. Every individual enrolled in the program works closely with Certified Recovery Specialists (CRS) who provide ongoing support, help with accessing community resources, and assist in developing the tools necessary for long-term sobriety. This holistic approach ensures that individuals not only receive the medication they need but also have a support system in place that encourages sustainable recovery.

Benefits of Rapid, Low-Barrier Engagement

The AIMS program emphasizes the importance of rapid engagement in treatment, which can be critical for individuals at risk of relapse or overdose. By reducing wait times and eliminating many of the common barriers to treatment, the AIMS program increases the likelihood of individuals starting their recovery journey sooner, leading to better long-term outcomes.

Some key benefits of this approach include:

  • Increased Access: Same-day or next-day consultations remove delays in starting treatment.
  • Flexible Options: Telehealth and in-person visits accommodate different needs and circumstances.
  • Ongoing Support: Certified Recovery Specialists provide continued guidance and help navigate additional resources.
  • Sustained Sobriety: The program’s comprehensive approach helps reduce relapse rates and supports long-term recovery.

Who Can Benefit from the AIMS Program?

The AIMS program is designed for:

  • Individuals with OUD who are not currently engaged in formal treatment.
  • Those who have had previous treatment episodes and are seeking to re-engage in care.
  • Individuals who have faced barriers such as transportation, stigmatization, or funding issues that have prevented access to OUD treatment in the past.
  • Individuals who can tolerate Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Brixadi, Sublocade) or Naltrexone (ReVia, Vivitrol) and are not receiving other narcotic treatment services.

By offering a streamlined, compassionate approach, the AIMS program is especially beneficial for those who have struggled to access traditional treatment services.

Insurance and Program Requirements

The AIMS program accepts several forms of insurance, including Community Care Behavioral Health, Carelon, and Allegheny County Drug and Alcohol Funding (when available). Those who are uninsured and eligible for medicaid can access care with the AIMS program supporting our efforts to reduce barriers upon admission.  To ensure the effectiveness of the program, participants must meet certain requirements, such as attending bi-monthly meetings with a CRS, keeping regular physician appointments, adhering to prescribed medication regimens, and complying with monthly urinalysis.
